Slim Dusty Centre Closer to Reality
19th July, 2006

The widow and chairwoman of the Slim Dusty Foundation Ltd, Joy McKean, joined the board of Directors last week to personally look over the new South Kempsey site for the Slim Dusty Centre.

The meeting gave an opportunity for the board members to inspect the site and discuss future development. The meeting was held at the Powerhouse Motel which is diagonally opposite the new site. They also had the opportunity to meet Noel and Cynthia Irvine who are providing office space as a generous donation to the Foundation.

General Manager of the Slim Dusty Foundation, Kathryn Yarnold, said, “It was an extremely progressive meeting with the outcome being that the submission of our development application is to occur in September and for that to be hopefully approved by Council by December.”

The site of the new centre is on a 12 hectare Crown Land site off the Pacific Highway at the southern entrance to Kempsey.

Ms Yarnold described the move as, “Another step towards successful completion of the project.”

“Finding this site is a big step forward for this wonderful project and terrific encouragement to all the fine people who have supported us in realising our dream,” Ms McKean recently.

The Slim Dusty Centre will be in a museum and cultural centre dedicated to the life and music of the country music legend with more than 200,000 visitors expected each year.

The Centre was originally proposed to be built at the showgrounds and Ron Vanderjagt, President of the Kempsey Showground Trust, has given the development his full support.

Anyone wishing to support the drive to create the Slim Dusty Centre — at whatever level — are also invited to make their tax-deductible donation to the Slim Dusty Foundation by calling 1800 18 SLIM (1800 18 7546) or by visiting the Centre’s website at www.slimdustycentre.com.au
