SOUTH Australia is a long way to travel for five days of country music, but it was a journey Keith and Helen Warren were only too happy to make to see Slim Dusty's home.
Helen Warren were only too happy to make to see Slim Dusty's home.
The pair visited the Macleay for five days this month, taking in the Kempsey Country Music and Trucking Festival.
After travelling out to Nulla Creek, where Slim's boyhood home still stands, Keith and Helen toured around Kempsey, South West Rocks, and Hat Head.
When they return home to Adelaide, the couple will continue organising their own country music tribute show, with all proceeds going to the Slim Dusty Foundation to help fund the proposed Slim Dusty Centre in Kempsey.

Gawler Country Music Club in South Australia.

"We (Gawler) were the first country music club in SA to hold a tribute show for him after his death in September 2003," Mr Warren said.

"We donated all the money raised to cancer research.

"This year we though it fitting to donate the money to Slim's memory.

"I have 102 of his 107 albums, and are chasing up the last few while I am over here.

"In our home we have various Slim memorabilia, but coming over here to his birthplace and even seeing his house where he grew up is a memorable occasion for any Slim fan."

Slim Dusty Foundation general manager Kathryn Yarnold said the couple's effort to travel all the way to the Macleay from Adelaide was a testament to the increasing support gathering across the nation for the Slim Dusty Foundation.

"It is fantastic to see these people make such a pilgrimage to our part of the world in the name of Slim," she said.

"The groundswell of support is quite touching."

Anyone wishing to support the drive to create the Slim Dusty Centre — at whatever level — are also invited to make their tax-deductible donation to the Slim Dusty Foundation by calling 1800 18 SLIM (1800 18 7546) or by visiting the Centre’s website at www.slimdustycentre.com.au
