The Slim Dusty Foundation Centre project continues full steam ahead — with the Capital Fundraising program well under way.
The most recent supporter — a major one — is Kempsey Shire Council.
As reported in the Macleay Argus on Tuesday 19 July 2005,
The Macleay Argus (19 July 2005), the Council will become a foundation donor of the Slim Dusty Centre proposed for Kempsey.
As part of this undertaking, the council will donate $25,000 to the Slim Dusty Foundation over a five year period at $5000 per year.
In return council will seek an indemnity from the foundation for the amounts donated.
Councillor Bob McWilliam proposed the move in a notice of motion at council’s meeting last week.

‘As a foundation donor, it would show that Kempsey Shire Council is serious about attracting tourism and supporting local businesses within Kempsey,’ he said.

‘This project is probably one of the largest undertaken within Kempsey — with the potential to attract a huge slice of the tourist dollar — as well as showing our respect to Slim Dusty a world wide country music icon and more importantly a local Kempsey icon.

‘With the Kempsey by-pass this project will attract people to come in off the highway and visit Kempsey — thus helping to keep our economy viable.’

The Slim Dusty Centre, in addition to being a valuable tourist drawcard, will incorporate a museum dedicated to the life and achievements of Slim, and the unique, rugged face of Australian culture.
It will house the incredible collection of priceless memorabilia, collected from a lifetime on the road, and provide a stage to launch national and international tours, taking Slim Dusty’s Australia on exhibition around the world.
The multi-purpose facility will provide much needed community benefits in Slim’s home town, including tremendous employment opportunities, economic development.
Once operational, the Centre will support young Australian musical talent with scholarships. It was Slim’s dream to give back to his hometown — one shared by the community and his family and countless supporters.
