An Australian icon is set to bring much needed life to the Kempsey CBD.

The Slim Dusty Centre office and headquarters are moving into the old Amcal Pharmacy premises in the former Action Supermarket Mall. Management hope the office will be open next week.

A building contractor is soon to take over the Slim Dusty Centre site on the Pacific Hwy, where the current office is located.

Slim Dusty Centre General Manager, Kathryn Yarnold said she was very excited about the move. "We'll now be in the centre of town able to answer any questions or queries from tourists and the general public," Ms Yarnold said.

Local artist Craig Fair will paint murals around the shop front, giving it an Australian and Slim flair.

"Slim's music will be playing and we're hoping to have a replica of Slim so people can have a photo with him," Ms Yarnold said.

Workers at the centre started to investigate moving to the Kempsey CBD before Christmas, believing it was time to lift the profile of the Centre. "It was important to provide a face in the community, especially seeing as we will be starting to recruit and train volunteers for the museum," Ms Yarnold said. In what will be an incredibly busy period for the staff at the centre, the new premises will allow staff to meet people who would like to become volunteers.

The move into Kempsey Mall has been helped by local business owners. "The community support has been amazing," Ms Yarnold said. "Amcal's Greg Hollier donted much needed shop fittings and newly laid carpet while Raine & Horne Commercial has donated the shop free of rent."
